The 60-63 Sweet Spot: Are You Maximizing Your Retirement Contributions?

If you’re a tech professional in your early sixties working in Silicon Valley or throughout the Bay Area, you’ve likely navigated complex financial decisions around equity compensation, ISO exercises, RSU vesting, and portfolio management throughout your career. As retirement approaches, recent changes to retirement contribution rules have created a noteworthy planning opportunity for those aged 60-63.

Starting in 2025, individuals in this specific age range can make catch-up contributions of $11,250 to their 401(k) or 403(b) plans, bringing total annual contributions to $35,750. This represents a significant increase over the standard $8,000 catch-up available in 2026 to those 50 and older, creating a three-year window to take advantage of the accelerated savings available through your 401(k) plan.

The catch, however, is that starting in 2026, higher earners, defined as those with FICA wages that exceeded $150,000 in 2025, will have to make catch-up contributions to their Roth 401(k). Given average compensation levels for the Bay Area, this may impact most workers looking to maximize their retirement contributions.

How Do Mega Backdoor Roth Strategies Work for Bay Area Professionals?

Many Bay Area tech company retirement plans offer after-tax contribution options that enable mega backdoor Roth conversions, allowing high earners to contribute well beyond standard limits. These strategies involve making after-tax contributions up to the overall 415(c) limit of $72,000 in 2026 (including employer contributions) and then converting those funds to a Roth 401(k) or Roth IRA.

When combined with the enhanced catch-up contributions available to those aged 60-63, this approach can help build substantial tax-free growth potential during your final working years. Determining whether your employer’s plan allows mega backdoor Roth contributions is an important first step in maximizing this opportunity. We recommend contacting your company’s benefits team or looking for the Summary Plan Description document within your company’s 401(k) site. This source document will summarize all the options available within your 401(k) plan.

What About Health Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) Planning for 2026?

Health Flexible Spending Accounts present another planning consideration as you approach retirement. For 2026, the contribution limit increases to $3,400 with a maximum carryover of $680 from year to year. While more modest than retirement account limits, this represents an additional tax-advantaged vehicle for managing healthcare expenses during the transition toward Medicare eligibility, particularly valuable for Bay Area professionals planning to retire before age 65.

How Should Silicon Valley Executives Approach Tax Optimization in Their Early Sixties?

The years leading up to retirement often involve complex tax planning considerations, especially for high earners in California navigating equity compensation, retirement distributions, Social Security timing, and enhanced contribution opportunities. Questions worth examining include how large RSU vesting events affect your ability to maximize contributions, whether to accelerate or defer equity compensation when flexibility exists, and what role Roth conversions should play if you anticipate lower income in early retirement years before required minimum distributions (RMDs) begin.

The three-year window from ages 60-63 creates specific planning opportunities, though the optimal approach depends on your complete financial picture rather than contribution limits alone.

If you’re approaching or already within this age range, reviewing your retirement savings strategy considering these enhanced limits may prove worthwhile.

At Traveka Wealth, we help tech professionals throughout Los Altos and the broader Bay Area navigate these planning decisions with a transparent, research-driven approach emphasizing tax efficiency and pragmatic decision-making.
